Tanzanite of 9.20 carats from Block D of the Merelani Mining District — the source of the highest-quality tanzanite production. AAA grade refers to the top tier of colour saturation, with the deep violet-blue that develops under standard thermal treatment. Heat treatment is universal for tanzanite and is the only way the gem reaches the violet-blue colour for which it is known; rough tanzanite is brownish-yellow before heating. The cushion cut presents the trichroism (colour shift between blue, violet, and burgundy depending on viewing angle) at maximum effect.
